The cover letter and why it is so important in the job application

Why do employers ask us for a cover letter? What exactly are they looking for?

Many employers indicate in their vacancy notices that they want candidates to write a cover letter and send it along with the CV.

 

If you have difficulty writing a CV, you can read our article “First meeting with the candidate or what is a CV?

 

Quite often, the requirement for a letter of motivation refuses many candidates, who consider it formal, except when they really show interest in the position and the company.

 

What is the role of the cover letter?

 

A cover letter serves as an adjunct to your CV and why the skills and abilities you own are appropriate for the growth of the company you are applying for. By cover letter you present yourself why you are the best choice among all candidates.

 

With the cover letter, you show a few things to the employer:

 

  1. Your style. By your style and way of writing, the employer can also recognize your attitude to work and life. The choice of words is of utmost importance.

 

For example: Ivan and Stefan apply to a human resources agency for the same position as a recruitment consultant. They both sent cover letters.

 

In his cover letter, Ivan writes: “I am interested in meetings with candidates because I want to get more insight into their work experience and I want to offer the best possible candidate for the client.”

Why do you want this job? Why are you the most suitable candidate? What can you contribute to the growth of the company? Are you motivated to develop in this company?

 

What should the cover letter contain? Is there a particular structuring of the elements in it?

 

The cover letter should contain the elements mentioned in the previous paragraph.

The structure of the cover letter is the most common:

Presentation of the candidate;

Presentation of his competencies and experience;

Answered the question: “Why should I choose me?”;

Contacts.

Conclusion: Stick to no more than one page length. Present yourself and your competencies appropriate to the position. Carefully select the language tools so you can refer the best reflect your personality in the cover letter. Leave an up-to-date email and contact phone.
When you already have the cover letter written for a job, do not use it for an application in other companies.

But before presenting the interview to you, we want to tell you a little more about Miroslav’s new employer, who, according to him, is not just an employer. How long have you been in this profession, and why did you choose it?

I have been in this profession for about three months. I started at the beginning of September 2022. I chose it because it is in a field that has been developing very dynamically in the last few years. I think this is one of the professions of the future. Soon, everything will be automated, and for better or for worse, technology will increasingly enter our daily lives. It is also a field in which many new things are constantly learned, and you can improve, develop, and build a successful career. Another important thing is the work environment, which I also really like because every day you communicate with different people from all over the world and the environment and atmosphere in the team I work in make me feel excellent.

Have you worked in a different field before?

Before I started working in the field of information technology, I worked as a surveying engineer. I graduated from high school with a geodesy major and a master’s degree in engineering in geodesy. After completing my education, I worked as a surveyor in several infrastructure projects and the construction of highways and premium roads. I have been involved in the construction of a number of engineering facilities, and I have been involved in the construction of many business and residential buildings.

Why did you change direction?

I have been interested in information technology since my teenage years. I’ve dabbled a little but haven’t delved into them much. The decision to reorient me from geodesy to the field of information technology is mainly because you have a very large field to perform. You can develop, and you can go very high in your career. This is a dynamic field where new technologies are constantly emerging. Also, many of my friends and colleagues decided to reorient themselves in this field, and to this day, they are very satisfied with their work, and perhaps this tipped the scales a little to decide to reorient myself as well.

What did you want to work for as a child?

Like every child, I wanted to be a policeman and a football player. I can’t say that I have fulfilled my childhood dream of a profession, but from a very young age, I have always been interested in how things work. What happens to make them work? Maybe it was my curiosity that made me choose information technology. So, in parts, I have fulfilled my childhood dream – to know how things work.

What motivated you to apply for this job?

I came across the job ad by accident. I saw it was in the IT field and read what the job type was and what the requirements were. I liked the position and decided to apply. The next day they contacted me and offered me an interview, and I accepted. I had to do a technical task, and then I was approved.

From the first day of my employment, the employer helped me a lot and continues to help me develop my skills as a specialist. It allows me to participate in various pieces of training and courses to improve myself, and it gives me the opportunity to participate in a number of important projects.

What skills did you acquire or develop?

From the very beginning, my employer provided me with all the necessary materials so that I could start working. And not only him but also the entire company team from the first day to this day I can turn to for help if I need it. I dare to say that in the few months since I have been working in this company, I have learned a lot of new things about technologies in the IT sphere, I have learned things that seemed difficult to me before, and today I already understand them.
I still have a lot to learn and improve as a specialist, and for that, I am grateful that I have the luck and the opportunity to join a team of some of the best IT specialists at the international level in Bulgaria.

What are your long-term development goals in this profession? What motivates you to stay in it?

My long-term goals are to learn new things, understand new technologies, and advance in my career. I would like to make a successful career in this field. It all depends on me and how motivated I am to succeed.

The company I work for offers me all the necessary conditions for this to happen. My employer and the team I work with also help me develop. I believe that here in Bulgaria, you can have a successful career as long as you are motivated enough and don’t need to go abroad to be successful.

As for what motivates me, I will say that what motivates me the most is the fact that I have no limit in my development and can go a lot higher. Once you see that, you start accumulating success, and your motivation and desire to succeed become even greater. Naturally, this involves a lot of work and effort, but I think it’s worth it.

 

What difficulties do you face in your current profession? How do you deal with them? How did your employer and new colleagues help you?

As in any profession, it has its difficulties. Maybe the 180-degree turn in my career was a bit difficult for me, but the team I joined and with whom I work and my employer made it so that I did not experience difficulties.

My employer and my new colleagues are always helpful. In any situation, I know I can count on them if I need help. The team is made of young professionals, which is also important because communication between us is easy, and we understand each other very well.

If I have to describe my new employer in 5 words, they are compassionate, tolerant, responsive, friend, and joker. (laughing)

  • He is compassionate because he gets into the situation of each one of the team and shows understanding to everyone. He is not the typical boss who demands from the team, but he is a part of us and works together with us as a true leader.
  • He is tolerant of everyone on the team. Even if you make a mistake, he shows you the right way and how things should be done.
  • He is responsive because he is always there if you need help, and he helps you.
  • He’s a good friend.
  • He is a big joker, has a sense of humor, and is fun to communicate with.

Please tell us more about your employer. How did you feel in the company, with the team and environment, when you started?

He has extensive experience in this field. He worked for a long time abroad and borrowed the work model from there. He also applies it in his company. He tries not to be perceived as a boss but rather as a friend and colleague, a part of the team with more experience ready to help you in any situation. He has managed to build a really calm atmosphere in the company. From the first day I started working, he ensured I didn’t miss anything. He had taken care to provide me with a stable working environment. The team was also very friendly and accepted me as a part of them. They helped me a lot initially, but they still helped me. I know that if I need help, they are there, for which I am extremely grateful. My employer and team managed to make me feel good from day one.

Tell a funny story to colleagues or clients.

Every day is fun in its own right. I like that the team is made up of young people, and communication with them is extremely easy. We have a lot in common and joke with each other every day.

 

How did you feel about the interview with us?

At first, I felt a little nervous about the interview itself, but then I relaxed. The team conducting the interview made me forget about the worry. After this, the interview, under my observation, went well.

How long have you been in the Netherlands and how do you feel?

I have been in the Netherlands for almost one year. Even though I am abroad, the environment and atmosphere in which I work and live predisposes me to feel great.

What is your job?

I work as an electrician in housing construction. The work is related to the overall implementation of an electrical project, from wiring to connection and the last luminaire. Despite the fact that I am a foreigner, I get the opportunity to deal with responsible tasks in various parts of the project, along with my colleagues from the Netherlands.

How do you evaluate your achievements so far? Are you happy with yourself?

Upon arrival in the Netherlands, each new electrician undergoes a one-week training, after which the candidate receives a certificate for successfully passing a practical exam. An exam for safe working conditions is also taken. In the beginning I had to make more efforts to acquire the necessary practical skills, but over time the results were obvious. In Bulgaria I also worked as a designer and electrician, but here in the Netherlands the way of performing the installations is completely different. The work is time consuming, but I am glad to be part of such a big project and the feeling of satisfaction is great when you see it realized.

Tell us the most ridiculous (funny, absurd) event you have encountered.

Our work required us to use special clothing and special safety shoes, but one of our colleagues had come to work with wooden shoes. You don’t see a person wearing wooden shoes every day.

And the most difficult?

The most difficult period was the onset of the corona-virus. I had taken a ticket for March 13th and was traveling to the airport when I was told that Bulgaria had declared a state of emergency and was closing its borders, then I was not sure if I would be able to return home. Fortunately, the flight was not postponed, but upon arrival in Bulgaria I was placed under a 14-day quarantine.

What lessons did you learn here? What did you learn here?

I came to the Netherlands all by myself, I didn’t know if I would be able to cope with the exams, if I would overcome the culture shock, if I would work with my colleagues, but I still took a risk and I am happy with the risk. There is nothing scary about getting out of your comfort zone. I met a lot of people, made some very good friendships and got a very good practical and life experience that I would hardly have had if I hadn’t taken the risk. One must always have a goal and strive for it. Despite the fact that I am already firmly on my feet in the Netherlands, I always feel nostalgia for Bulgaria and I am waiting for the moment when I will come back home again.

Do you feel more capable? Did you gain more confidence in yourself and at work?

With each new day I learn something new, something useful both at work and in life. I feel confident that I can pass on what I have learned to new colleagues after me, and why not show something from me to more experienced colleagues. With each new project I get more and more responsibilities and more freedom of action. My colleagues and I work like a well-oiled machine and I can say that we are a cohesive team.

What do you dream about?

I want one day to go back to a different Bulgaria, where human work is really appreciated, as well as the due respect and trust. Bulgaria, where I can feel calm and free from the tense everyday life.

What is the kindest thing a colleague has done for you?

Many colleagues and I became friends, and I am often invited to dinners or barbecues with their families. I am grateful to people for being so friendly with me, even though I am a foreigner.

We have been working in the Netherlands for three years and we are currently mainly engaged in agricultural work. We collect various vegetables and fruits from the farms.

What was your first impression of the new job?
We were most impressed by the freedom of work and the great attitude of employers and colleagues towards us.

2020 was difficult for all of us. What was the biggest challenge for you?
The challenge was that we work a lot and different people who live in different places and areas. We were worried about how healthy we would stay. We also fear that we will stop work sooner than expected and planned. People here are also worried about the whole situation and its development in the future. Fortunately, everything went well and there were no problems from colleagues or managers.

Did you learn something new about yourself in the most difficult periods? What gave you the strength to continue?
We have learned for ourselves that we are stronger and prepared for emergencies when we are together. The hope that everything would be fine gave us strength to continue. Positivism is very important for those working outside Bulgaria, and more over! When you are abroad it is a little different and in such an uncertain situation, the belief that everything will be safe for us in the end has strengthened us so that we can continue and not succumb to fear and panic. We are glad that we overcame this together because it made us stronger and strengthened our relationship.

Would you recommend other people to follow your example and apply for a job abroad?
Yes, we would recommend it to anyone who wants to test their human capabilities and limits in a new and dynamic environment. Our abilities and skills were the things our employers valued, not where we came from and what our social status was. This speaks very well about the company’s management and its level of professionalism.

Share a personal story or example that has made you feel useful and appreciated in your work.
There is an extremely interesting story, but unfortunately we will need a lot of time and rows to tell it. In short: We had disagreements with one of the managers of the company we work for to this day. It is difficult to work with many people and get along with everyone equally well, it is even impossible. Thanks to our skills, the owner of the company was ready to do absolutely everything so that we could stay and work for him.

What does a person need to be to do your job successfully?
To do any work I believe we must be responsible, honest and fair. To give our best, even if it is difficult. This will not go unnoticed. Employers who care about their employees will notice this wherever you are.

What do you dream about?
We dream of being the whole family together, of being alive and healthy and of loving and understanding each other. We have it for now!

“In Bulgaria, we both worked in the state administration.
When we first arrived in the Netherlands we worked in a goat farm for a month and a half. We then worked for ten months in an apple processing plant. For the past six months, we have been running a family-owned leek growing and packaging company.”

How do you evaluate your achievements so far? Are you satisfied with yourself?

“Over this period of time, we have proven that we are capable and able to handle any situation and task. We have been able to build good relationships with our colleagues and employers. We enrolled in a Dutch language course and successfully graduated. “

 

Tell us about the most ridiculous (funny, absurd) situation you have ever encountered.

“In the beginning, when we came across it seemed fun, and now still is, the way of communication – we are in the Netherlands, we speak English, and our roommates spoke only Polish ….. but later we realized that Polish is very close to the Bulgarian language. (laughing)”

What big challenges did you face?

“The most difficult moment for us was when George had health issues that got worse from the environment we were working in and we had to change jobs. We were in big trouble – the factory owner didn’t want to let us go because he was relying on us. “

What did you learn here?

“To rely on ourselves and to believe in our own abilities. We were convinced that there were no impossible things and you learn lessons throughout life. “

Do you feel more capable? Have you gained more confidence in yourself and in your work?

“We are more confident in our abilities. If it were not for these challenges, we would have certainly not been who we are now. “

What do you dream about?

“At the moment I work in a flower plant factory, and Tsvetelin works in a land and fertilizer factory for all kinds of plantations. Before that, we worked together for a year in a chicken factory.”

How do you rate your achievements to date? Are you satisfied with yourself?
“There is still a lot to learn, we are learning during our entire life, but we think we are dealing with the tasks quite well.”

Tell us the most ridiculous (fun, absurd) story that you have encountered.
“Certainly there are, but we can not remember any specific ones right now.”

And the most difficult?
“Everything new is difficult, but on 06.12. 17 Tsvetelin had a Forklift Driving Course and passed it successfully. It was difficult to be prepared in Polish or Dutch language, there was no Bulgarian language option. Nevertheless, he passed the test with the highest score of 93%.”

What did you learn here?
“Here we learned mainly to rely on ourselves.”

Do you feel more capable? Have you gained more confidence in yourself and at work?
“Yes, we feel more capable and confident.”

What are you dreaming about?
“We dream of many things but mainly to create our own home.”
